Smyle Design's unique production method is definitely a labour of love. Every piece in their product range is born from a discarded CD or vinyl record and Matt and Kylie's original artwork. The artwork is carefully applied to the CD or vinyl, a resin coating is hand-poured, to make the piece strong, durable and tactile. They are then cut into shapes using Rosie, their very clever CNC router, before being hand sanded, assembled and packaged. No steps in the production process are outsourced. From start to finish, from a discarded piece of plastic, to a beautiful pair of earrings, or a brooch, or a clock, every step is carried out by Kylie and Matt in their home studio in Brisbane. Each piece is made with pride, and with care, and with happiness by two people doing what they love.
We started Smyle Designs because we are both makers at heart and happiest when involved in creative pursuits. Committed to doing our bit to address the world wide issue of waste. Plastic waste is one of the biggest challenges the world currently faces. 6.3 trillion kilograms of plastic waste has been created since 1950 and 91% has never been recycled, even once. Together we have worked hard to come up with a clever way of upcycling discarded plastic materials into wearable art and unique homewares. Gravitating towards jewellery and homewares because we wanted to make things that help spread a bit of happiness out into the world. Jewellery is a simple pleasure. Putting on a colourful pair of earrings or a cute brooch you love lifts your mood and makes you feel a little bit happier. Similarly, having some colourful accessories around your home creates warmth and a lovely feel. It's important to surround yourself with things that are a joy to look at. We all deserve to feel good and colourful designs are a wonderful way to lift moods and spread happiness. - Kylie & Matt
